How do I measure for an outside mount shade?Updated an hour ago

First you want to determine the mounting location–on molding or above. Take into account molding style/shape.

Measure width of the window at 3 points–top, middle, bottom. Use the widest measurement including the molding. Use exact measurement rounding up to the nearest ⅛”. Add 2” (1” to each side) if space allows, for more light control and to reduce light leakage.

Measure the height of the area you want to cover from the top of the window (including molding) or window opening down to the sill–or lower if you prefer extra overlap for added light control and privacy. If you plan to mount the shade above the window molding, include both the molding height and an additional 2–4" to allow space for mounting hardware. at least 2" of clearance above the molding is required, and 3–4" is recommended for thicker, more protruding molding.

Measure at 3 points–left, center, right. Use the longest measurement rounded to the nearest ¼”. Shades up to 60" (in width or height) have a headrail depth of 1.5", while shades over 60" have a 2.5" headrail. Be sure to account for your molding depth if mounting over it.
